TOYAH'S BLOG - MAY 2013
07 May 2013 »

...it's my birthday month, my husband's birthday month AND our wedding anniversary! YIPPEEEEEEEEEE!

We, THE FRIPPS, could say we have celebrated this by appearing on MR & MRS. ITV'S cult, yes, cult programme about spouses and their knowledge of each other. Back in the 70's I used to watch this programme with the entire Willcox family, totally astounded that any couple could actually get a question wrong. But fast forward to 2013 and the new series is clever, funny and in my opinion addictive. I won't say who won but the questions caught us both out with hilarious twists and turns.

As we are in Wolverhampton for two nights I am able to have the team over for lunch. I don't have time to cook so we are about to tuck into local fish n' chips followed by tons of ice cream! There may be only three of us on stage but there's also the sound, lighting, costumes and some of their family members too.

STATEMENT ABOUT ST. RICHARD'S HOSPICE
25 March 2013 »

Toyah Willcox is absolutely mortified that the Daily Mail has implied that she is unhappy with the care her mother received at ST. RICHARD'S HOSPICE in Worcester.

St. Richard’s hospice allowed Toyah's mother to die with dignity and with as little pain as possible. St. Richards’s hospice have their patient’s care and comfort as a priority at all times. Toyah is so grateful to the hospice she has in the past donated monies to them and will continue to do so in the future.

Toyah does believe each patient must be treated as an individual when being put on the Liverpool Care Pathway and in her mother's case, Toyah's mother wasn't able to cope with the news of her terminal illness and the hospice allowed Toyah's family to be as involved as much as humanly possible in such a tragic situation.

TOYAH'S BLOG - MARCH 2013

Rehearsals for HORMONAL HOUSEWIVES have been a fantastic learning curve. This show is a three hander and we never leave the stage. Apart for two very quick costume changes in the wings.

This is quite a challenge for me as I tend to drink a pint of water every hour and therefore I suffer the biological consequences because of it, but not with this show…………….my water habit will have to be subdued somewhat for the next ten weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just read the script for HORMONAL HOUSEWIVES for about the tenth time and I am still hooting with laughter.

MY GOODNESS IT IS VERY, VERY NAUGHTY. I can see this tour is going to be a RIOT! With predominantly female audiences totally misbehaving whist hubby is at home! And why not! The days are getting longer, January has gone and the future awaits…….

I am so excited, this is my favourite time of year, knowing the spring and summer is coming, what a fantastic feeling.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!! And hasn’t 2012 gone ridiculously quickly?

It seems like yesterday the band where playing Shepard’s Bush and  Bristol Tunnels. It feels like only last week we played the O2 Islington!

Now I am getting ready to tour HORMAONAL HOUSEWIVES, dealing with the  press for 67 dates, all in different towns and setting up the touring  schedule for the TOYAH BAND in the autumn as well as organising HUMANS 3 being signed in the UK.

I would like to dedicate this letter to UNCLE BILL who passed away at 2am on the 3rd Jan. He is my husband’s uncle and was a huge supporter of our work. Bill, or Alfie, was an inspiration and he taught me that every second, every minute, every day is a gift.

The Changeling Resurrection Tour ended at Brighton this month on such a high! What a crazy day. Thanks to technology in the space of 6 hours I shot a new session with Dean Stockings, filmed Chockywockydoodah with Nigel Glocker and helped Ali Carron set up shooting her documentary before taking the stage for one of the most exciting 2 hour gigs I can remember since Drury Lane in 1981. The audience were GREAT! And the band excelled yet again. It all ended on a WOW!

The whole tour has been really satisfying with the right mix of songs from THE CHANGELLING, ANTHEM, SHEEP FARMING and BLUE MEANING. All four albums have such radically different moods they really compliment each other.

LOVE IS THE LAW 2013 TOUR is already in the planning, and dates are going in thick and fast for late Sept/ Oct/ early November. The tour will be called LOVE IS THE LAW & GREATEST HITS…….bit of a mouth full but promoters want all ages to come!

TOYAH & ROBERT FRIPP ON BBC4'S LOVE & MARRIAGE
24 August 2012 »

Toyah and husband Robert Fripp will discuss their twenty-six year marriage on a new documentary series Love & Marriage.

Including brand new footage shot at their home, the programme is notable for being one of very few television interviews Robert gives. The documentary will be a unique insight into the marriage of two legendary British performers.

Once dubbed as rock music's "odd couple", Toyah and Fripp have made three albums together, The Lady or the Tiger, (Sunday All Over the World's) Kneeling At The Shine and The Human's Sugar Rush and performed concerts all across Europe with Sunday All Over The World.

Robert also guested with The Humans on their Estonia album launch concert and their first ever UK live dates including a headline show at London's Scala. The programme is slated for transmission on BBC4 on 27 September 2012 although exact scheduling is to be confirmed.

THE HUMANS…. IN THE STUDIO AND UP, CLOSE & PERSONAL
24 August 2012 »

The Humans – comprising Toyah Willcox, Bill Rieflin, Chris Wong and Igor Abuladze – begin recording the third album this September in Seatlle, USA. After successful writing sessions and recording demos earlier in 2012 the four-piece band now begin committing the tracks to tape in American studios.

The album is mooted as revolutionizing their sound again with melodic pop music this time influencing the material with perhaps a nod to The Sugarcubes. The album is expected to be released in Spring 2013 with supporting live dates. In the meantime you will shortly be able to watch The Humans: Live, Up Close & Personal Podcast series online at YouTube and thehumansofficial.com.

The recording was made in an exclusive, intimate gig at HMV Library Birmingham at the end of the band's worldwide Sugar Rush tour last October. The gig which presents material from both of their albums Sugar Rush and We Are The Humans is interspersed with exclusive interview footage.

I am looking forward to the autumn tour immensely, it has been planned sensibly so we can all give a 110% each night, especially me, because the songs require so many octave jumps, so we have made sure there are no more than three shows in a row in any given week allowing me to use my voice to the full each night and not have to hold back to save myself for the five other shows over the same week!

NEW LIMITED EDITION TOYAH PRINTS FOR SALE
13 June 2012 »

A new painting by Melissa Mailer-Yates, celebrating The Changeling/Brave New World image is now available to purchase in print form.

When asked by the artist for her favourite photograph from the 1980s Toyah chose the wonderful image from 'The Changeling'. The resultant painting inspired by this awesome picture was displayed at the premiere of 'The Power Of Three' movie in London, November 2011.

The production of a print was discussed, and Toyah chose the hospice which cared for her mother, St Richard Hospice, as a beneficiary from the sales. This giclee print is the result of that discussion and is available in two sizes, 18x18" and 26x26".

It is printed on a thick, heavyweight watercolour paper (190 gsm), with a textured matte surface giving it the look and feel of a stunning original work of art. Both inks and paper are archival quality. Each print is produced to order, and is individually signed by the artist. Postage and packing is included in the price, and will be dispatched as soon as it is ready.

There will be just 312 prints made available, marking the 30th anniversary of 'The Changeling' in 2012. Further details and to order visit here.

I returned "up north" last week for the Decades festival in Workington West Cumbria where the locals again, were extremely friendly, but in a different way. Stepping out of my car at the hotel a young man with a pint in his hand asked for a photo with me, of course I said yes. So with pint in one hand he robustly placed his spare hand on my left buttock and said smile for the camera. I thought "What! Down south you'd be put in jail for the night for that", but he was friendly and indicated he would like to take things further so I moved on and locked myself in my room. Then later a very nice man drove me to the venue for soundcheck and in the conversation I asked a question I always ask people " what birth sign are you?" To which the reply came " I'm not going to sleep with you, you know!" Right, so very quickly I was putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 and realised that in Workington and possibly the whole of West Cumbria, that the men are "up for it".

I can honestly say I had no idea that the Changeling was such a popular album! This time last month I was worried sick about how we where going to make it all work live, it felt like a potentially heavy and clumpy piece of work but we all stepped on stage at Brighton and the missing link stepped in to make each song so relevant and current in today's climate and that was THE AUDIENCE! Boy oh Boy! Song after song the temperature just kept on rising along with the energy.

TOYAH'S BLOG, APRIL 2012

On first re-listening to The Changeling I thought "my god this is pretentious twaddle!" then I remembered the circumstance it was written in. The Falklands War had just started and there was an atmosphere of disbelief and terror. It was a profoundly disturbing time. I remember my brother Kim being warned he could be put on stand by and my whole family were terrified for him. He was a Harrier fighter pilot in the early 1970's, luckily he never saw "action" in his time but because he was highly qualified there was a chance he might be called out of retirement. Thank god it never happened. So here I am today, 2012, listening to an album I haven't listened to at all in 30 years thinking how am I going to perform this and believe in it and slowly as I repeatedly go over the tracks it dawns on me that there is a hell of a lot of really nice detail in it. The scope in the lyrics is very different to anything I'd written before and the style vocally is completely different to Anthem.

We are to some extent replicating the WARRIOR ROCK set list of 1982 with the addition of CREEPY ROOM, BE PROUD BE LOUD and adding some die-hard favourites like BIRD IN FLIGHT and NEON WOMB. My costume is already hanging up and ready to go. It is a metal dress and it is surprisingly heavy! Sean Chapman is beavering away on my headwear. It has a puckish theme!

CALLING ALL ANGELS & DEMONS FROM THE SUMMER OF '83
25 February 2012 »

Calling all Angels & Demons...

1983 was a very special year for us Toyah fans. Toyah was starring in Trafford Tanzi at The Mermaid Theatre and a group of young fans calling themselves the Angels and Demons were lucky enough to have one of the best summers of their lives.

Some of us even got the chance to sing backing tracks on Love is the Law, were you were one of those chosen ones?

I was an Angel and Demon and I am now a TV Producer planning to make a film about that special summer. I am trying to track down and speak to all my fellow Angels and Demons.

Please email angelsanddemons83@gmail.com

Really looking forward to hearing from you all.

Ali Carron (known as Alison back in the day)

“THE POWER OF THREE” SELECTED FOR US FILM FESTIVALS
25 February 2012 »

THE POWER OF THREE, starring Toyah Willcox, Brümilda Van Rensburg & Robin Craig, has been selected for 'in competition' categories of two American film festivals. The film will screen at the following festivals in the coming months.

1st Annual Brooklyn Girl Film Festival
New York, NY USA
March 29 - March 31 2012
www.brooklyngirlfilmfest.com

Women's International Film & Arts Festival
Miami, FL USA
March 28 - April 1 2012
www.womensfilmfest.com

THE POWER OF THREE is a feel good comedy filmed on location in Belsize Park and Hampstead, The Power of Three reinvents the myth of middle age. Michelle, Olivia and Lizzie were best friends in university. A team. But that was 30 years ago. Each woman dreads an upcoming reunion at Michelle's 50th birthday party in England. Life hasn't gone exactly to plan: one failed marriage, an empty nest, stalled careers. Too late to start over? Not when they rediscover the bonds of friendship. And the women they once were – and could be - again. Fifty, fierce and fabulous: The best time of your life.

Work wise there is so much happening. We are already gearing up for the tour in April. The songs are chosen, the set list discussed, the learning process started and the costume design in motion. But also I've had some really interesting offers. One is to participate in an animation series of Sonia Copland Blooms children's books which are topping the best seller list at the National History Museum. (Sonia is Orlando Bloom's mum.) I've walked myself happily into a corner by mentioning a short story I was writing to my acting agent who now wants it as a script by May……..heaven help us both……..deadlines are not my forte. AND a documentary is going to be made this year by Ali Carron one of the original ANGEL AND DEMONS, about 1983 and the "Angels and demons" who congregated outside the Mermaid theatre when I was appearing in Trafford Tanzi. So we will be posting an appeal soon for anyone there that year to get in touch with Ali if they are willing to be in the documentary.
